What Papers Do Children Sit in Year 6?
Year 6 pupils in England sit six statutory test papers: two for grammar, punctuation and spelling, one for reading and three for mathematics. The tests are externally marked, and the subject results are reported as scaled scores.
A scaled score of 100 marks the expected standard. The raw mark needed for 100 can change each year, so use the conversion table for the paper your child completed.

The Six SATs Papers, Grouped by Subject
Mathematics Paper 1: arithmetic
40 marks · 30 minutes
One arithmetic paper covering written and mental calculation across KS2 maths.
Mathematics Papers 2 and 3: reasoning
35 marks each · 40 minutes each
Two separate reasoning papers covering problems, geometry, statistics, algebra and ratio.
English reading
50 marks · 60 minutes
One reading paper with questions on retrieval, inference and vocabulary.
Grammar, punctuation and spelling
50 marks · 45 minutes; spelling 20 marks · about 15 minutes
One 50-mark grammar and punctuation paper, followed by a separate 20-mark spelling paper.
Official Past Papers or Online Practice?
Use an official past paper when you want the exact booklet, timing and mark scheme from a previous test year. You can find those materials in our guide to official SATs resources or go straight to the GOV.UK collection.
SATs Arcade practice is original and online. It is useful when the marked paper has shown you the problem and your child needs more questions on that topic. Fractions, inference or punctuation is a much clearer next step than repeating a whole paper.
I would use both. Sit one real paper to find the gaps, then spend the next few sessions on those gaps. Another full paper can wait until there is something new to measure.
What to Look at After a Practice Paper
Start with the lost marks. Was the issue a topic your child has not understood, a word in the question, or simply running out of time? Those lead to different practice.
Pick one small area and practise that first. The public question pages let you try a set without an account. A free account is there when you want to keep completed work together and continue across subjects.
